Good Craic Silent Valley

by Belinda Cullen

It is so exciting to see Good Craic growing and maturing. In the middle of July I opened a pop up shop in Silent Valley (I'm calling it Good Craic 2.0)

. It was a dream come true but also a steep learning curve. Suddenly I was managing a number of staff and needing to make sure the right stock was in the right shop at the right time! It’s been a little crazy to say the least (which helps explain the radio silence on this blog!!). But I think we’ve settled in now and things are smoother….. just in time for the season to end. Just kidding. We’re hoping to keep the shop open, at least on weekends, until the end of October. Keep an eye on my social media to get up to date info.

It’s been great to meet so many folk who’ve never encountered Good Craic before. Those who have come over on the ferry for the day, Kilkeel locals with their day passes, and loads of others out exploring the Mournes. The feedback from both tourists and locals has been very encouraging. I've been able to distributed many copies of my new Good Craic Guide to the Mournes signposting people towards loads of fabulous small local businesses.

I’ve also really enjoyed the excuse to create a new range of Silent Valley souvenirs. As soon as I knew it was game on I designed new magnets, t-shirts, hats, keyrings and a special souvenir tin filled with sweets. And it’s been appreciated. We’ve sold more than 250 magnets in 9 weeks! We’ve also sold a good few aerial maps of the Mournes, always popular with walkers. Also popular are leprechaun snowglobes, postcards and keyrings. A little surprising to me is the number of books we’ve sold! Not so much the ones about hiking in the Mournes or other walking books. I’d expect those to be be popular in a place like this. But the Irish recipe cook books- potato recipes, soup recipes and Granny’s bread. Every one is on the hunt for that perfect recipe!

Hopefully we’ll see you out in Silent Valley in the next few weeks. The shop is just up opposite the cafe here. Will definitely be open weekends 11am to 5pm although our hours during the week may need to be reduced. Would be a great place for you to start your Christmas shopping if you’re thinking in that direction at all yet.

Don’t forget we’re open all year long over in Rostrevor and will be back in Silent Valley from around Easter 2022. Look forward to seeing you somewhere along the way!
